Deepavali, Diwali, the Festival of Lights; however you refer to the timeless celebration of the victory of light over darkness, images of the Hindu festival come to mind with ease.

There are the lines of the faithful visiting century-old temples, many carrying flickering oil lamps. There are bazaars packed to the brim every night of the week where people buy everything from snacks to sparklers and saris.

The usual commerce at Little India’s restaurants, jewellers and department stores doubles up as locals and tourists alike take the spectacle in.

Deepavali takes place on November 6 this year, and 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the annual Little India Deepavali light-up. This year’s light-up is going on for a full two months, with two million lights staying up until November 25.
